To accelerate this, we are hiring an AI Engineer to build and scale our GenAI-powered products from day zero.

You will get the opportunity to build GenAI-powered features that sit at the heart of our product — from our conversational AI assistant, to intelligent categorization agents, to LLM evaluation frameworks that ensure quality at scale. This role isn't about experimenting in notebooks — it's about building production AI systems. You'll work directly with our leadership team to define our GenAI strategy, establish best practices, and create the foundation for our AI-driven products.

You'll be working side by side with product, ML engineers, and customer operations, with a clear path to technical leadership as we scale.

How will you make an impact?

• Build and evolve Palm Pulse, our conversational AI assistant powered by Claude, including streaming responses, tool use, and conversation memory.

• Design and maintain intelligent categorization agents that use multi-provider LLM routing (Anthropic, OpenAI, Vertex AI) to automatically classify financial transactions at scale.

• Be at the forefront of using AI-assisted workflows.

• Build and improve our prompt optimization system, using evolutionary algorithms to continuously improve categorization quality.

• Own our LLM evaluation framework to ensure quality doesn't regress as models and prompts evolve.

• Develop agent workflows with multi-round tool use, MCP protocol integration, and function calling patterns.

• Build and manage our AI infrastructure through infrastructure as code and support other engineers in their AI & backend needs.

• Drive engineering excellence through version control, CI/CD, testing, and reusable frameworks.

Where we work

Palm is a remote-first company, with team members across multiple locations. We value flexibility and believe the best work often happens outside the office.

That said, this is a core technical role. To build our AI platform collaboratively and support each other in a high-growth environment, we'll have regular in-person sessions with the engineering team and founders. We'll work together to determine the right cadence that supports both flexibility and collaboration.

Our wish list

Must-haves

• 3+ years in a backend or AI engineering role with strong Python experience.

• Proficiency in Python (FastAPI, async/await, streaming) since it powers our entire AI backend.

• Hands-on experience with LLM APIs — ideally across multiple providers.

• Comfortable with leveraging AI-assisted workflows and tools in the development process.

• Track record of building production AI features — not just prototypes, but systems that serve real users at scale.

• Experience with prompt engineering — structured output, tool definitions, and template management.

• Familiarity with agent and tool-use patterns — multi-round loops and function calling.

• Knows their way around PostgreSQL for conversation persistence and task queues, and BigQuery for analytics and data access.

• Experience with cloud platforms (GCP preferred), infrastructure as code, and cloud cost optimisation.

• A startup mindset — being scrappy, product-driven and comfortable with ambiguity.

• Strong ownership mentality with the ability to work independently but also collaboratively drive projects to completion.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience building LLM evaluation and quality assurance systems.

• Domain knowledge in fintech, financial data, or banking systems.

• Experience with Airflow or similar orchestration tools for scheduling AI workloads.

• Experience with Go.

• Prior experience in a rapid-growth scale-up/startup environment.

• Contributions to open-source AI/LLM tools or communities.
